What some people may not know is that there are many other symptoms associated with a migraine episode that can be a sign that the headache is on the way.  Below, we‘ll talk about ten signs of a migraine that are not as familiar as the headache.

 10 Signs a Migraine Might Be Approaching

  1. You feel excited, irritable, anxious or depressed – A migraine episode can be preceded by different mood changes.  Some migraine sufferers will feel anxious, down, or even hyper all of a sudden before realizing that a migraine attack is developing.  
  2. You’re not sleeping well – People who live with migraines often have difficulty falling asleep or wake up feeling unrested.  There has been research linking the frequency and intensity of migraines with a lack of restorative sleep.  Some people will experience insomnia as a result of their migraines, and changes in sleep schedule (I.e. staying up late on the weekends) can also be a trigger.
  3. Your neck hurts – The arrival of a stiff or painful neck can signal a migraine episode that is about to unfold.  As many as 75% of migraine sufferers have neck pain, stiffness, or tightness that often occurs at the top of the neck just beneath the skull.
  4. Your nose is stuffy and your eyes are watering – Sinus symptoms like watery eyes, drooping eyelids, and a nose that’s either stuffed or runny can be a sign of a migraine to come.  Because of these symptoms, it can be easy to mistake a migraine for a sinus headache.
  5. You experience changes in your vision – Migraines, particularly migraine with aura, can cause visual disturbances.  Auras may present as wavy lines, flashes or flickers of light, blurred vision, double vision, or even temporary vision loss.  Some migraine episodes can have auras and not progress into the headache phase at all.
  6. You have nausea or vomiting – Nausea is one of the most common symptoms of a migraine episode – some studies even report up to 95% of migraine sufferers experience nausea.  Digestive system function slows significantly during a migraine attack and changes occur within the nervous system that can help explain why so many people have nausea as an associated migraine symptom.
  7. Smells, sound, and light trigger pain or make it worse – In most cases, all someone in the midst of a migraine episode wants to do is find the darkest, quietest place possible to rest.  Loud sounds, bright lights, and certain scents (I.e. strong perfume) can either trigger the onset of a migraine or make one feel a lot worse.
  8. You have a throbbing or pulsating pain on one side of the head – While it’s certainly true that the headache associated with a migraine can affect both sides of the head, more often than not, it’s experienced on one side.  The headache phase is the best known of all migraine symptoms, and for good reason – the pain of a migraine headache can be debilitating.
  9. You’re yawning a lot – When you’re tired, it’s normal to let out a few yawns in a row.  However, another sign that a migraine might be waiting around the corner is excessive yawning.  Over 1/3 of migraine sufferers reported that yawning was one of their telltale signs that a migraine was developing.
  10. You’re at a loss for words – It can be common for migraine sufferers to have speech difficulties during an attack.  For some, noticing difficulties like the inability to find words or “get them out” can be one of the first signs that a migraine is developing.
