Adjustment

What is an Adjustment?

An adjustment is the correction of a misaligned vertebra. The NUCCA technique involves only the correction of the atlas bone (C1) of the spine which allows the rest of the spine to return to a balanced position on its own. The atlas is the first bone of the spinal column where the body's nerves pass through before entering the brainstem. This correction relieves the pressure on the nervous system, restores nervous circulation and promotes self healing. The adjustment itself does not cause healing but rather re-aligns the atlas and allows for normal nerve circulation and control over the bodily systems. The doctor only adjusts when tests show that the atlas is misaligned.

Adjustment

Is the adjustment painful?

No. The upper cervical correction can be described as a slight pre-determined direction of pressure applied to the first bone (atlas) in the neck. It can feel like a massage on the side of the neck just below the earlobe (this is the location of the atlas). There is NO twisting of the neck. This correction is engineered to reposition the weight of the head (10 to 14 pounds) over the center of the body in order to restore body balance and restore brain to body communication. When the correction is made, muscles begin to relax, blood and oxygen circulation is increased, the brain is able to communicate with the affected area, and the body's natural healing process begins. The healing process continues as long as the body balance is maintained and the brain can communicate with all parts of the body.

Will I feel better right away?

If your symptoms are the direct result of the subluxated spine you will experience some relief immediately with your first correction. Recovery from the long-term effects of the subluxated spine however may take weeks to months as you recover.

Can I consult with the doctor before starting care?

We will offer you a free private consultation with the doctor to learn more about how NUCCA can benefit you. An exam to determine your specific needs is available for a fee. You are under no obligation to start care. Please call our office to schedule your consultation:

Do you have any tips for me?

It is extremely important to remember that your recovery to good health is a process that is unique to you. Many factors are at work in your body to help you regain health. Some patients may feel an immediate relief from their symptoms and some may not. Many times a patient will notice that their health has improved in other areas that they didn't expect. Your body is unique and healing comes from within. NUCCA chiropractic works to help restore body balance.

You may experience many changes throughout your care. These changes are perfectly normal. When your body regains it's alignment it begins a healing process that includes these changes:

  • Decrease or relief of pain and symptoms
  • Pain moving from a larger area to a smaller area
  • Tired feelings as your body heals
  • Headaches as your body releases toxins
  • Pain in the area of an old injury
  • Muscle aches as your body re-balances
  • Runny nose, diarrhea, or changes in menstrual periods as your body eliminates toxins
  • Pain moving from place to place not lasting for longer than three days in any one place

The following are a list of suggestions to follow during your care at our office.

  1. Be sure to get plenty of sleep to allow your body to recuperate and repair.
  2. Sleep on a firm mattress, preferably one which is neither too hard nor too soft but just firm enough to hold your body level while at the same time soft enough so that your shoulders, buttocks, etc., will depress into the mattress.
  3. Your pillow should be neither too high nor too low. The ideal pillow is one which supports your head so that your neck vertebrae will be level with the rest of your spine. Avoid sleeping on your stomach.
  4. Don't put pressure on your head or neck to raise your body. Raise your head off the pillow when changing positions.
  5. Do not read or watch T.V. in bed particularly with your head propped at a sharp or strained angle.
  6. Do not sleep sitting in a chair or in cramped quarters. Lie down in bed when it is time to sleep.
  7. Avoid rubbing, probing or poking in the areas your doctor adjusts.
  8. Use your neck in its normal range of motion. Avoid sudden twists or turns of movement beyond normal limits of motion, especially of the neck. Don't let anyone pop or twist your neck.
  9. Avoid extreme bending of your spine in any direction; avoid stretching reaching, or other overhead work. Be particularly careful when brushing or shampooing your hair.
  10. When lifting, keep your back straight; bend your knees and let your legs bear the strain. Hold the object lifted as close to your body as possible. Don't lift items while you're in an off balance position.
  11. Tuck your chin while lifting to stabilize your spine.
  12. Participate in simple exercises to strengthen your body, but avoid jarring activities which place stress on your neck.
  13. Be patient, the body's healing process sometimes seems very slow. If you have any questions about any phase of your healthcare…fell free to ask your doctor.

nerve chart

Many conditions are the direct result of the breakdown of the body structures and the distress to the nervous system from the subluxated spine. It is difficult to determine if your condition can be helped before the subluxated spine is detected and corrected. A consultation with one of our doctors, a detailed health history and a spinal postural examination can usually determine if you have a subluxated spine and if it relates to the trouble you are having.
